Lowcountry Weddings

Lowcountry Wedding {Morgan + Austin}

Thanks to our beautiful new online magazine, we are SEVERELY behind when it comes to blogging all of our favorite Lowcountry weddings which may have been a bad thing the past few months, but you’re all in for a treat now!  Over the next few weeks prepared to be thoroughly spoiled with some serious Southern wedding inspiration starting with Morgan + Austin’s amazing Lowcountry wedding from the talented Jeanne Mitchum Photography.  This South Carolina stunner is the epitome of everything we love about the coastal South.  It’s effortlessly dreamy, wonderfully charming and makes us wish we were right there to enjoy that Lowcountry breeze.  We can’t get enough of this earthy green and brown color palette and rustic details, not to mention the burlap-laced vases, that amazing anemone-filled bouquet and all of that natural sunlight! charleston weddings

From the Bride:  We got married at my husband's parents' house off Abapoopa Creek on Johns Island. I made every decoration and all the favors by hand with ideas from pinterest and etsy. I spent hours googling free printable templates for heart shaped fans, gift basket tags etc. I have to say that the pictures are so beautiful due to the the amazing light we had and our amazing photographer. We were also very lucky in the weather department.

Charleston Weddings {Ashley + James} William Aiken House

The ladies at Ooh! Events always take my breath away when they send over stunning Charleston weddings, especially when they take place at the lovely William Aiken House, and I’m so excited to send you off into the long weekend with such a pin-able masterpiece.  The mix of graceful peony arrangements with a touch of dusty millers and mercury glass sprinkled throughout gave an effortless elegance to this Summer affair.  Not to mention lanterns hung from the trees!  Thanks to the talented Brandon Lata Photography for capturing this timeless Lowcountry wedding!  Oh, and is that not the most adorable flower girl you've ever seen!?

Marion's in the French Quarter {Meaghan + Loyd}

I love when two of my favorite vendors, Chancey Charm Weddings and Carolina Studios by Gillian Reinhardt, team up for a Charleston wedding, and this bad boy is bound to knock your socks off!  Meaghan + Loyd said ‘I do’ in a beautiful, traditional ceremony in the heart of the Holy City at the majestic Cathedral of St. John’s the Baptist.   After tying the knot, they headed over (via carriage ride, of course!) to Marion’s in the French Quarter where they celebrated the evening away with family and friends!  The entire black and yellow affair was dressed in white hydrangeas, sunflowers and sweet grasses roses for that added Lowcountry touch.  To top off the perfect day, the couple rode off rickshaw-style down East Bay Street!

Daniel Island Club {Mandy + Greg}

I went to the University of Georgia, so I've got a soft spot in my heart for the color red (actually, I'm obsessed.).  It's such a sassy color and, at times, it can be difficult to properly integrate into your wedding color palette, but I'll tell you what, Bride Mandy nailed it as she gave it a chic, Lowcountry flair!  Mandy looked STUNNING in a fitted mermaid gown, while her gals rocked fabulous, one-shoulder red dresses.  The couple wed on lawn of the Daniel Island Club before enjoying a lovely evening with family and friends.  Thanks to Bri McDaniel Photography for capturing this amazing Charleston wedding! charleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddings

Lowcountry Wedding {Margaret + Jesus}

Margaret & Jesus married on June 22, 2013 under large majestic oaks on the coast of South Carolina. The couple lives in DC and wanted an intimate southern destination wedding, and Lord knows that's exactly what they got when they ventured to the Lowcountry! The overall vibe was natural, beautiful and elegant. Margaret was breathtaking in a stunning Vera Wang wedding gown and gold sparkly Kate Spade flats. She carried loose stems of white and yellow seasonal flowers with a pop of pink. The ceremony was lined with tin bails of sweet baby's breath flowers. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed the cocktail hour on custom built wooden tables draped with lace and beautiful flowers.

For the reception, Margaret & Jesus joined their guests in a large tent draped with cafe lighting and enjoyed local southern flair foods and seafood paella. The couple loves hot sauce so, naturally, they had to have a hot sauce bar. The Tao Reed band played well into the night. Everyone lit paper lanterns in the end and were whisked away in a vintage green car.  It was an celebration with impeccable style in a natural and elegant setting and we're so glad Donna Von Bruening was there to capture all the details!

Wedding Woes: A Bride's Blonde Blunder

This time on Wedding Woes we're sharing one of our bride's biggest "blonde moments" that coincided perfectly with her bridal portraits.  Definitely not the best timing for her, but it's happened to the best of us, right?! Enjoy!

“ For a working bride, weekends are about the only time to get key pre-wedding tasks as well as every day appointments taken care of. With only so many weekends in a month you often find yourself over booked. In my case, I had the bright idea to make an appointment to test out my “wedding hair color” the day before my bridal portraits. Everyone knows you need a couple of days for your highlights to blend in and fade to a natural color. Well, everyone except for me. The day before. Really? WHAT was I thinking!?

Well, I wanted my hair “summertime blonde” for my wintertime wedding and boy did my stylist make it blonde! Half an hour after my appointment I went to pick up my gown for my portraits the next day. As soon as I got to the gown shop and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror I thought "Oh s***, this is waaayyyyy too blonde!" The staff at the shop saw my concern but they all assured me “it was fiiiineee”.

I drove home immediately afterwards and showered, praying some of the color would wash out.  After blow-drying my hair I just stared at myself in the mirror and started sobbing. I was going to look like My Size Wedding Barbie in my portraits and what if I couldn’t get it back to normal in time for the wedding?!

I frantically drove back to the salon hoping my stylist could work some magic. She (of course) told me it looked great but she could fix it if I really wanted her to. Bridezilla much? I think so. After what seemed like hours of the entire staff at the salon reassuring me it looked good, I finally convinced myself that it was OK and I would come to enjoy the color.

In the end, my bridal portraits turned out fine and my hair was back to normal in time for the wedding. However my bridesmaids did enjoy teasing me about how I managed to keep my hair so sun kissed that late in the fall!”

Brides, we’ll quote Elle Woods on this one for you: “The rules of hair care are simple and finite. Any Cosmo girl would have known.” But just incase you forgot like this Lowcountry bride, here are a few helpful tips to avoid hair-do horror.

  • We know your schedule leading up to the big day is packed, but try to avoid planning appointments that will directly affect the other back to back!
  • For brides who color their hair, it does fade so give yourself a week or two before panicking!
  • Make sure your stylist knows exactly what you want when it comes to both color and style. And if it doesn’t turn out the way you want it, don’t be afraid to say something!

Think you can top this? Send submissions for Wedding Woes to elizabeth@alowcountrywed.com

Wedding Woes: A Bridesmaid's Dress Distress

For our first installment of Wedding Woes we’re sharing a reader’s less than functional relationship with every bridesmaid’s worse enemy - her dress. Enjoy!

“From the get-go I had a bad feeling about this particular dress. For starters, it was for a winter wedding and while the dress was gorgeous, I knew the color would completely wash me out that time of the year. On top of that, when I went to have my measurements taken the number written on the order form was TWO SIZES bigger than what I normally wear - and even I sucked in!

Needless to say, my bruised ego and I took our time returning to face the dress again. However when I zipped it up I found myself pleasantly surprised – not only did the dress fit, but it was at least two sizes TOO BIG! The only bad news was, there were only weeks until the wedding and the dress was in desperate need of alterations.

Luckily one of my fellow bridesmaids knew a seamstress who promised I’d have the dress back within days. So I went and got it fitted and as promised I picked it up again with a week to spare. It wasn’t until the day of the wedding that I finally stepped back into the dress. But as I pulled it up it got to a point where it wouldn’t pull up anymore. After a few seconds of complete confusion I realized the bottom of my dress was sewn shut!

I went into total panic mode. I soon realized only the underlay of the dress had been sewn together. After some quick moves with a pair of scissors my dress was functional again. Shortly afterwards I was headed to the church in my dress that was finally flawless. And as for the color – I got a spray tan so Casper didn’t make an appearance while my best friend said ‘I do’!”

While this bridesmaid’s story makes for a good laugh now, we came up with a few ways to avoid a similar state of panic for any of our future bridesmaids:

  • If you really think your measurements are off, say something! They may even have a spare dress you can try on for size.
  • Don’t procrastinate! Pick your dress up as soon as it has arrived and take care of alterations right away.
  • Even the most trusted seamstress can make a mistake. Try the dress on before you take it home to make sure it fits perfectly!

We were in stitches with last week’s submissions so keep them coming to elizabeth@alowcountrywed.com!

Boone Hall Plantation Wedding {Jessica + Jon}

I may have taken an unannounced vacay late last week (sorry!), and while I know I may have let you guys hanging, I promised it was much needed!  For starters, we wrapped up our first styled shoot at the SC Aquarium that went above and beyond my expectations.  I literally cannot wait to share what we created.  Then, we headed over to the Rice Mill Building to officially welcome the 1st ever NotWedding Charleston, and to say it was a blast is quite the understatement.  I wrapped things up with a weekend on Kiawah and now am ready to get back at it and deliver some serious Lowcountry loveliness :)  This first Charleston beauty comes to us from our friends Kristin Burke Photography and the gals at Ooh! Events.  It took place on the grounds of Boone Hall Plantation and it included everything we love so dearly...starting with those unreal chandeliers!  They incorporated a soft, feminine color palette with mason jar and burlap to create an effortless Southern evening!

The NotWedding Charleston {Save-the-Date}

As many of you have heard, The NotWedding is heading to the Lowcountry in TWO short weeks!  This big ol’ fake wedding is taking place at one of our favorite Charleston wedding venues, the Historic Rice Mill Building, and is bound to blow your little socks off.  Literally!  They’ve assembled a cast of crazy, talented wedding vendors to provide you an evening of amazing food, awe-inspiring décor and one heck of a good time.  But you know what’s really awesome…they’re offering 2 lucky ALW readers a pair of tickets to attend the event!  That’s right, grab your hubby-to-be, mom or MOH to enjoy this Lowcountry bash!  To enter, leave a comment, tweet us or facebook us telling us just how much you want to attend!  Winners will be chosen next week :)  .

So, if you thought we were kidding, or semi-exaggerating about just how awesome this event is going to be, check out The NotWedding Charleston Save-the-Date photo shoot from Lime Green Photography and tell me you aren't dying to see what else they've got up their sleeves.  It’s insane…

White Point Gardens {Kelly}

If Kelly Sauer is involved, then you know you’re about to get your pretty on, and if this isn’t pretty then I just don’t know what else is.  The bride, Kelly, is strikingly beautiful, effortlessly gorgeous and such a natural in front of the camera that you can’t stop starring at these images.   It was so hard to narrow down my favorites!  I can only assume she is any photographer’s dream!  With her hair swept off her face, she donned a classic Anne Barge gown that was paired with a matching necklace and earrings.    All I can say is Kelly Sauer sure does have a knack for capturing loveliness. charleston weddings on a lowcountry wedding blog

Intern {Sessalee}

So, last week we introduced Kelsey, our new Graphic Design intern, with a big ol' Lowcountry welcome, and this week, we’re hoping you do the same for our new Editorial Intern, Sessalee!  Sessalee comes to the table with an eye for style and a passion for design, so it’s no secret that we’re over-the-moon to have her join our team.  She’s got some exciting things in store for our Lowcountry brides and promises to bring them mounds of Southern wedding inspiration!

Tell us a little about yourself...and by a little, we mean a lot!

Well, my name is Sessalee and I’m from the small town of Fort Mill, SC.  I’m a lover of college football, sweet tea, country music, and Nicholas Sparks’s novels. I hold my family, friends, and two dogs extremely close to my heart. I’ve lived in the beautiful state of South Carolina the majority of my life and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Having lived in the Bluffton/ Hilton Head area my freshman year and conducting research in Charleston, I have really familiarized myself with South Carolina’s lowcountry and what all it has to offer. I’m currently a senior earning a BA in Hospitality Management with a focus in meetings and events at the University of South Carolina [GO GAMECOCKS!!]. I’ve always had an eye for design and never knew what I wanted to do with it. After taking an event planning course at the university, I found my niche. I’ve grown a passion for creating events, weddings being my favorite! I look forward to working alongside Mrs. Erin Whitsitt to further my experience and share the same love for the beautiful lowcountry. I’m excited for this journey and can’t wait to see where it takes me.

Top Five All-time favorite TV Shows…

  1.  The classic, “I Love Lucy”, is my top favorite TV show of all time. Lucy and Ricky always find a way to make any day better right before bed!
  2. “Say Yes to the Dress” is my obsession on TLC. Seeing brides pick out their perfect wedding dress always gets me emotional and excited all at once! I also love getting to see all the new style of dresses that come out!
  3. “Pretty Little Liars” is my favorite series to watch because it offers a taste of romance and mystery. It’s one of those shows that stay on my DVR so I can watch it over and over again!
  4. “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills/ Atlanta/ Orange County” is my taste of weekly reality TV. I must say I love watching the drama unfold in these women’s lives.
  5. “Big Bang Theory” is a favorite of mine and always gives me a great laugh!

 What are you excited to bring to the table this summer...

I am excited to bring to A Lowcountry Wedding my love for design and tasteful ideas to make any wedding unique and perfect! With an eye for detail, I will provide brides who are soon to “tie the knot” with all the helpful tips to make their day special and memorable! I’ve always wanted to have the opportunity to enhance my skills and knowledge in doing something I feel that I’ve been made to do. Creating blogs and shoots for this new magazine that features the best of lowcountry weddings is right up my alley! I’m so thankful for this opportunity and can’t wait to get started!

What’s your favorite thing about weddings...

My favorite thing about weddings would have to be the venue and the overall design of the reception area. I believe that the colors and design elements at any wedding adds to the excitement and beauty of someone’s perfect day.

It’s Friday and you just cashed your paycheck….what’s your first splurge?

Pedicures are my way of relaxing and rewarding myself after a long week of school and work. I think every girl deserves to be pampered, therefore why not splurge on a pedicure? I make sure to go to Starbucks after to get my favorite raspberry iced tea.

 If you were a major league baseball player, what would be your ‘at-bat’ song?

Darius Rucker’s version of Wagon Wheel is my favorite song to jam out to wherever I’m at, so I would have to choose that as my ‘at-bat’ song.

 .

Hometown

I’m originally from Tampa, FL but I was raised my whole life in a small suburb outside of Charlotte called Fort Mill, SC. Fort Mill offers a small town feel with a little bit of city life being so close to Charlotte.

Favorite Item of Clothing

My favorite clothing item would have to be my brown wedges. They can be the perfect accent to dress up any outfit. Not to mention they’re easy to walk in which is always a plus!

 Favorite Summer beverage

My favorite summer beverage would definitely have to be a mojito, raspberry being my favorite! Mojitos in my opinion are the perfect summer drink because they are so flavorful and refreshing! I’m a sucker for any fruity cocktail.

 .

Current favorite color palette

EMERALD is by far my new favorite color palette! It can be paired perfectly with rich purples, bold blues, and stunning gold accents to create beautiful and exotic features. I assume my fascination with peacocks had a lot to do with this new favorite of mine.

There’s been a whole lotta awesome-ness taking place at A Lowcountry Wedding the past few weeks, and with the help of Miss Kelsey, things will just keep getting better!  Kelsey is joining the ALW crew this summer as our graphic design intern and we couldn’t be more excited to have her.  She’s been tasked with the huge responsibility of designing/creating our brand, new online publication and I’ve got a feeling you’ll be blown away by what she’s got in store for us.  So, give Kelsey a big ol’ Lowcountry welcome! charleston wedding blogs

Tell us a little bit about yourself…and by a little, we mean a lot

Where do I begin? [Laughs…] Well, my name is Kelsey and I'm a glass half-full kind of girl. Ever since I could remember I've loved to draw. Once I learned that I could express myself that way, I’ve never stopped. I love romantic comedies, and I live on 90's music. I was born on February 7, 1991 in Riverside, California to military parents Chris and Ena, with one older sister, Erin. During many years, my family and I were given the opportunity to live in the states of Hawaii and California. In 2006, my parents retired and settled down in the beautiful state of Columbia, South Carolina. In high school, I was undecided about what I wanted to do until one day, during my senior of high school, I stumbled upon an ad in the Seventeen Magazine. It read: If you're interested in a creative career, The Art Institute of Charleston is just ahead. Soon after, I applied for the Graphic Design program and was accepted in 2009. That's where I was further introduced to the design industry where I learned the importance of networking and creative problem solving. In 2012, I presented my portfolio as a graduate. I am now living the next chapter of my life and believe the BEST has yet to come!
