Afterwards, everyone was treated to brunch catered by MOSAIC. Nautical Charleston Wedding Engagement by Kelly Dillon Photography
Fresh, clean photography, an adorable couple and the charm of the Holy City makes for one very happy A Lowcountry Wedding Editor and a gorgeous Nautical Charleston Wedding Engagement. The lovely Kelly, of Kelly Dillon Photography, spent the afternoon with Olivia + Chad discovering the quaint corners and cobblestone streets of Charleston before heading over to the harbor to capture a few shots by the marina! I'm loving the couple's outfit choices, from the slightly more formal looks as they touredDowntown, to the more casual attire over by the water. I'm totally obsessing over Olivia's preppy pink top and navy and white striped skirt.

The NotWedding Charleston Returns to Boone Hall Plantation this July!
We are thrilled to announce that The NotWedding is returning to Charleston for round two this summer at one of our favorite Charleston wedding venues, Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant on Wednesday, July 9th. So mark your calendars! The ceremony is planned for 7:00 pm and already has quite the extensive line-up of Lowcountry wedding vendors. The NotWedding is a bridal show alternative in the form of a big, fake wedding. “Wedding Guests” are brides- and grooms-to-be who enjoy a touching ceremony, a tasty dinner and a dance-party reception while truly experiencing the wedding vendors in action. Not to mention, The Not Wedding always creates some serious prettiness and dreamy inspiration for your big day. You can check out The Not Wedding Charleston which was held at the Rice Mill Building last year.
Those attending will experience a perfectly planned “wedding” and have the opportunity to meet the vendors (including The Click Chick Photography, Clay Austin Photography & Scarlet Plan & Design) behind the scene. The bride and groom featured throughout the event are actually a married couple from the Charleston area that will be using the event to renew their vows.
Tickets include an emotional (fake) wedding ceremony encouraging strong marriages, a delectable catered dinner, and a reception full of drinks, dancing and dessert. The NotWedding also boasts a handful of surprises planned for the guests throughout the evening.
Callie Murray, owner of The NotWedding, believes her company offers a revolutionary twist to the traditional bridal show: “The NotWedding allows brides-to-be to get a feel for how wedding vendors would actually perform on their wedding day, and wedding vendors love being able to truly show off what they do and how they work under the normal pressures of a wedding day.”
Head on over to The NotWedding to purchase your tickets to what is sure to be one-heck of a Lowcountry Wedding bash! We hope to see you there!
Elegant Rice Mill Wedding in Charleston by Dana Cubbage Weddings
Margie + Matt were married in beautiful Charleston, SC this May, surrounded by their closest family + friends. After a traditional ceremony at Margie's family church, everyone made their way to one of our favorite coastal wedding venues, the Historic Rice Mill building, to celebrate with the newlyweds. With elegant gold decor, accented with green+ white florals, their wedding was simple + timeless, much like the newlyweds! Thanks to Dana Cubbage Weddings for capturing all the details at this lovely Rice Mill Wedding!
From Dana Cubbage Weddings: "Family played a large role in their day, as Matt's 3 sisters were all bridesmaids and Margie's 3 brothers were all groomsmen. I loved how they incorporated all of their siblings into their big day! The bridesmaids stunned in silver sequined dresses and the groomsmen looked dapper in classic black suits. They were a stylish bridal party for sure! Margie + Matt couldn't stop smiling all night and I was LOVING their favors - custom sunglasses - which guests wore all night long and made for a lot of fun photos on the dance floor. I think all couples should give their guests sunglasses!"

Secret Tree House Wedding Inspiration by Sea Star Arts Photography + Carly is Inspired
Jeni, of Sea Star Arts Photography, recently sent over this adorable Spring Soiree created by a handful of Charleston wedding vendors who really know how to deliver that modern vintage charm we all go crazy for. Carly is Inspired, Curiosity Vintage Rentals, & 428 Main handled the decor, while Dodeline Design designed the invitation suite and Twenty Six Divine created the elegant cake. Thanks to Carly is Inspired for sharing their inspiration...
From Carly is Isnpired: "The setting for our photo shoot in the quaint I’On neighborhood in Mount Pleasant, SC was a tree house tucked away amongst a path of lush green ferns overlooking a gorgeous lagoon. Childhood friends tying the knot in a place where they spent long summer days dreaming about their futures inspired us to create an intimate wedding filled with a combination of feminine and masculine details and modern vintage décor captured by Sea Star Arts Photography. An lace-inspired stationery suite from Dodeline Design kicked off our celebration, which had our couple spending the afternoon celebrating their nuptials by enjoying cake garnished with fresh blackberries and sipping on champagne. We imaged shared conversation at their table complete with vintage family silver pieces serving as centerpieces filled with gorgeous handmade DIY arrangements of flowers, and an antique mirror reflecting a ribbon ceiling installation for a touch of whimsy. Heirloom English china (Grandmother’s of course!) and linens completed our softer feminine look, while a vignette of rustic antlers, cigars, and a gramophone elicited a more masculine feel. We wanted to carry a classic, heirloom theme throughout the tree house to not only give additional nods to years gone by, but to inspire tradition, family, and the future, too."

Rice Mill Building Wedding by Dana Cubbage Photography + Ooh! Events
We're excited to be back from the long holiday weekend so we can share a dose of coastal perfection from the talented Dana Cubbage Weddings. You may remember awhile back when we had the pleasure of sharing Megan + Jay's Downtown Charleston engagement session. It was gorgeous, so it won't be any surprise when you lay your eyes on their stunning Rice Mill wedding. With a gorgeous pastel palette and a meaningful Lowcountry backdrop on the Ashley River, their day couldn't have been more perfect. Jay and Megan love to spend their spare time on the water, and Jay proposed to Megan while on a boating day trip last year, so it was only natural to incorporate the water and boats into their wedding day. Ooh! Events designed elegant floral arrangements with a nautical navy accent, while A Charleston Event pulled the whole day together. Fun lounge furniture created a laid back feel to the venue and the Coconut Groove Band kept the dance floor packed all night with a fun selection of island music + oldies. Jay + Megan drove away in a vintage teal 1962 Cadillac Deville from Lowcountry Valet & Shuttle.

Preppy William Aiken House Wedding by shannon michele photography
Shannon Michele Photography can do no wrong in my eyes, especially when she’s paired up with a dream team of Charleston wedding vendors like Sara York Grimshaw, Technical Event Company and the design masterminds over at WED. It’s like a match made in my personal Lowcountry heaven. Beth + Greg’s William Aiken House wedding was the preppy Southern bash that all Lowcountry brides dream of. Effortless, tasteful, timeless…complete perfection! I mean, come on, bridesmaids dressed in seersucker, an adorable ring bearer, swoon-worthy florals and one seriously gorgeous bride. Folly Beach Surprise Proposal by Caroline Ro Photography
Y’all, this might be the cutest proposal Folly Beach has ever seen, and we’re so glad that Charleston wedding photographer, Caroline Ro, has shared it with us. You know you’ve got a good guy when he pulls out all the stop to ask for your hand in marriage and Groom-to-be, Shawn, spared no sweet expense for the lovely Karlee. He prepared to sweep his lady off her feet in a secluded corner on Folly Beach where adorable Polaroids of the couple were strung from tree-to-tree. After getting down on one knee and asking the beautiful Karlee to be his wife, the ecstatic couple were greeted by friends and family to celebrate their laid back Lowcountry engagement on the beach. Thanks to the wonderful Caroline Ro Photography for capturing such a genuine and memorable Folly Beach Surprise proposal!

Old Wide Awake Plantation Bridal Session by Aaron and Jillian Photography
I always love featuring my sweet friends over at Aaron and Jillian Photography, especially when they're kind enough to share all the wonderful details. From Jill of Aaron and Jillian Photography: "Kelly, who considers herself to be Northern by birth, but southern by heart is getting married at Old Wide Awake Plantation in Hollywood, SC on April 13th, 2014! She chose to do her bridals there at the house and it's grounds because she loved it's shabby chic flower printed walls, the expansive veranda, the tree lined driveway and the ivy covered front stairs! We totally agreed! The place just oozes southern charm... so much so that Reese Witherspoon herself chose it as her wedding venue back in 1999! Kelly came all dolled up in her Watters designer dress, Nicole Miller jewelry and beautiful Tessa Kim blush veil! She even went as far as to have her fiance's navy name tag sewn into the inside of her dress as a nod to the "something blue" tradition! She's the epitome of a southern bride!"

Navy Dunes West Club Wedding from Monika Gauthier Photography
We fell in love with Lauren a few weeks ago when we featured her dreamy Middleton Place bridal session that the wonderful Monika Gauthier Photography captured. Well, as luck would have it, her gorgeous Dunes West Club wedding made it's way to my inbox and it's everything I thought it would be. With a navy and silver color palette, this Lowcountry celebration includes a gorgeous bride, hand painted programs, lovely natural light!
Tell us a little bit about how you guys met…
Dave and I met at college our freshman year at University of South Carolina. The girl that lived in the room next to mine, my freshman year, was a friend from his hometown in Massachusetts. Throughout freshman and sophomore year we would run into one another, but it wasn’t till junior year that we started dating.
Over break our junior year Dave randomly called me to see if I would look at an apartment for him. Since he was in Massachusetts and I was in Columbia I told him I would. As a “thank you” he took me on a date to California Dreaming and we were inseparable ever since. We have been dating going on eight year now and we are loving it!
Let's hear all about the engagement!
We got engaged in the Dominican Republic on October 18th, 2012. We were vacationing at a resort in the Dominican Republic and having a wonderful time. The second night of our vacation we went to dinner at the most beautiful restaurant at the resort, La Yola. The restaurant was on a dock over the water with no walls. There were only a few people at the restaurant, probably four other tables. The restaurant had a four-piece Dominican mariachi band that played for us all night. We had great food and awesome wine, and as the night went on I kept asking Dave if we could get up and dance. Finally after we had eaten our dinner, Dave caved to my persistent request ;-) and we went to the dock near the water and slow danced to the music from the band. While we were dancing Dave was saying the sweetest things and he got on one knee and asked if I would be his wife. I cannot express my sheer happiness at that exact moment and of course I said yes! While we were hugging, crying, laughing, and kissing, our server brought over some champagne, and the few people in the restaurant all cheered. Our server even took pictures of Dave proposing to me! I later learned that Dave arranged pretty much the whole night... the music, the dancing, the camera, our server, and the delicious champagne. It was so absolutely wonderful.
We LOVE your beautiful Lowcountry Wedding Venue! What was it about Dunes West that sealed the deal?
We loved the view of the marsh! We also liked the style of the club house, the walled garden for the ceremony, and the customer service from Jason Hanson. They made the wedding planning process at the venue very easy, and were super accommodating about which vendors we brought in, decorations, etc.
Out of the entire day, what was the most memorable moment?
Walking down the aisle towards Dave for sure! There was so much emotion on Dave’s face and I couldn’t look away! He was getting teary eyed and it took everything in my power not to “ugly cry” right then and there. It was also an amazing feeling to walk towards the person I’m going to marry and be surrounded by all of the people we love and who love us.
What’s your favorite picture from your wedding and why?
To be honest I have several favorite pictures! It’s hard to choose just one, so I’ll give you my top three.
- While we were getting ready, Monika captured a picture of my mother hugging me. I love this picture because it captures the emotion of my mom beautifully. I’m so happy to have this picture.
- After the ceremony, Monika captured a picture of me and Dave walking back down the aisle. I love the one of us both looking at the camera. We are both so happy and this picture shows it! When I look at this picture I can feel exactly how I felt that day! It’s an amazing feeling.
- For the portraits there are so many I love! One of my favorites is the one where I’m wearing the fur and Dave is whispering in my ear. I’m looking up slightly and smiling. I love both the back and white and color version. Brings back good memories!
To have and to hold in case you get cold – Since our ceremony was outside and in February, we offered to the guest blankets, pashmina wraps, and hand warmers. That way they could snuggle up during the ceremony outside in the walled garden.
new: My dress and earrings. The earrings were a gift from Dave.
Something old and borrowed: For Something the ceremony I borrowed my friend’s, Ashley Lyles, silver fox fur. The fur was also used at my friend, Amber Maeda’s, wedding.
Something blue: My shoes. They were navy blue Badgley Mischka.
Tell us all about the details! Did any have special meaning? What was your favorite?
We had many details at our wedding, and listed below are a few of our favorite:
- Jalapeno Pepper Jelly – These were the party favors (and we had NONE left!). As a hobby Dave grows a vegetable garden, so we used the jalapeno pepper he grew to make this jelly. The recipe was Dave’s grandma, who is no longer with us, so we labeled the jars “Mama Frances Jalapeno Pepper Jelly”. Jalapeno Pepper Jelly is amazing on pork and brie.
- Coloring Books – We had a lot of kids at our wedding, so we wanted to do something special for them. I created a coloring book (including drawing all of the illustrations) and published it through the company I work for, CreateSpace. We were able to dedicate the coloring book to our four nephews and niece.
Guest count: We had 185 guests attend
Color Palette: Navy and silver
Programs – Dave’s mother is a local artist, and she painted in water color of our wedding venue. We used the painting on the front of the programs. We wanted to be able to incorporate a piece of her beautiful artwork into our wedding.
Tell us a little bit about your menu…
The menu included:
- Apps: Sausage stuffed mushroom caps, Silver dollar ham biscuits, Baked brie and crackers and a Vegetable display
- Dinner Stations: Shrimp and Grits, Carving station with sirloin steak and ham, Pasta station with penne with red sauce and tortellini with cream sauce, Caesar salad station
Most valuable piece of advice you’d give to a newly engaged bride:
Even though your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, it’s only one day. Do not get too stressed over the details of the day, it’s only one day! Even if things don’t work out like you planned it’s okay and it will still be perfect because you are marrying the love of your life.

Gray Unitarian Church + Mills House Wedding by Carolina Photosmith
This past Easter weekend's rainy weather wasn't quite up to my Springtime standards, but it looks like we'll be making a sunny rebound in the days to come. Despite the rainy start to Tiffany + Jay's Mills House wedding day, the end result was a Lowcountry bash that we couldn't wait to share! The sweet couple hails from New Jersey but decided a Charleston destination wedding would tickle their fancy. The afternoon started with a traditional ceremony at the historic Unitarian Church where the bridesmaids donned gray bridesmaids dresses and the men wore classic tuxedos. Guests headed to the Mills House Hotel for an evening of celebration where they found beautifully designed centerpieces with pale pink flowers and succulents from First Bloom. Thanks to Carolina Photosmith for capturing all the details!
