Clemson-Themed Cooper River Room Wedding by Richard Bell Photography

Bride Lauren and her Groom Micah are huge Clemson fans, so when the began planning their beautiful Cooper River Room wedding, they knew incorporating their favorite team's colors were a must.   The bridesmaids wore vibrant purple dresses that perfectly matched the pocket squares and ties the guys donned.  Orange lilies and roses were paired with purple hydrangeas to finish off the cheery look.  Lauren wore a GORGEOUS gown with capped sleeves and a full, ruffled skirt.  Thanks to the wonderful crew at Richard Bell Photography for capturing all the details of this beautiful Charleston wedding! From The Bride: "We wanted our wedding to be a reflection of all things that are important to us: family, friends, faith, food, fall, and football. We prefer simple and natural decorations and we tried to incorporate as many sustainable elements as possible. Even our wedding invitations can be planted and grown into wild flowers. We are big proponents of local businesses so everything from our food to our cake to our favors were all from local businesses. Our wedding colors are orange and purple. They remind us of our favorite time of the year- Fall and of our favorite football team- Clemson!"

Magnolia Plantation Wedding by Riverland Studios and Duvall Events

A gorgeous Sarah Seven gown, hints of baby's breath and sweet Southern details make for a laid back (and gorgeous!) Magnolia Plantation wedding from our friends at Riverland Studios.  With the help of Duvall Events, Rachele & Michael were married in a magical outdoor ceremony under the magnificent oak trees on the carriage house lawn. The bride chose a color palette of cream with turquoise accents, which was the perfect compliment to this romantic summer wedding. We love the elegant and chic decor placed against the rustic outdoor setting. The newlyweds celebrated their reception inside, which exuded an equal amount of sweet Lowcountry charm- complete with Spanish moss and mason jar chandeliers, twinkling strings of lights, and an assortment of vintage chinaware. Charming Charleston Wedding Engagement from Sea Star Arts Photography

If you guys haven’t met the lovely Jeni Rone Becker of Sea Star Arts Photography, then I highly recommend setting up a guacamole-eating, margarita-drinking happy hour with her because it will be well worth every minute.  Not only is Jeni a genuinely awesome person, but one look at her Facebook page and you’ll be hooked.  She’s always on the move, enjoying, and capturing only like a talented photographer could, all the wonderful events and gorgeous details the Holy City has to offer.  So, it’s no shock that when we’re fortunate enough to share some of her work we get super excited.  What I love about Jeni (besides the laundry list I jotted down above!) is her ability to take make any backdrop or scenery strikingly beautiful.  Give her a camera and an adorable couple, and girlfriend will make magic happen, which is exactly the case for Hillary + Phil’s Charming Charleston Engagement! charleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddings, savannah weddings

Charleston Wedding Planners {Pure Luxe Bride}

I asked my gal pals (and Charleston wedding planners), Francesca and Blake of Pure Luxe Bride to help us out a bit.  With the recent wave of newly engaged ladies in search of how to kick off their Lowcountry wedding planning journey, we thought it was necessary to have them share a few tricks of the trade.  They whipped up the their top 5 things every Groom and Bride-to-be need to accomplish to enjoy their engagement and the entire wedding planning process.  Ladies, take it away…. pure luxe bride

We are so thrilled to be writing this guest blog post for A Lowcountry Wedding, and what better topic to discuss than how to get that wedding planning ball rolling?! After some serious Pure Luxe brainstorming, we came up with the five most important steps to help you get started.

charleston wedding planners

1. Do your research

The very first step in planning your wedding must include research. It is very important that you weigh all your options when it comes to venues and vendors, price ranges, and of course, planners. To get married in coastal South Carolina or the church your parents were married in? An indoor or outdoor ceremony? How much does a wedding cake typically cost? These are all very important questions that your research can help you answer.

pure luxe bride

2. Discuss your budget and stick to it

After you've begun your research, you'll become more familiar with the pricing of all things weddings. You'll learn that getting married on a week day or in the off-season could cost exponentially less than a Saturday wedding in March. You'll decide whether you and your spouse-to-be prefer a band or a DJ to help you dance the night away. Discussing a budget and sticking to it is the most important aspect of wedding planning - hands down. Get your finances in order and figure out the best allocation of your resources for your special day. Unfortunately, you can't spend money that you don't have BUT you can do a lot with the money you do have. Figure out what number works for you and do your best to stay within it. Everything else will fall into place with the help of your planner and vendors.

charleston wedding planners

3. Be realistic

Creating a budget is a difficult task in itself, but creating a realistic budget can be even more difficult. Your dream wedding is within reach; it just requires a creative spin and a few adjustments here and there. The worst thing to happen in your planning process is when reality becomes a distant memory, and the ideas of draping the entire tent emerge. If details like this aren't in your budget, don't even go there! A bride who's dreams become bigger than her budget makes for a disappointed bride and the last thing we want is for our brides to be disappointed!

pure luxe bride

4. Think about your guest list

One way to combine your research and budget in a realistic and all-encompassing fashion is through a tentative guest list. Discussing who the essentials, probably's, maybe's and definitely not's are ahead of time can really help you manage your budget. A huge amount of your decisions and costs will be based upon how many people will be invited/attending your wedding. Small pricing details also come into play once you're familiar with your guest count such as save the dates/invitation pricing, escort/place cards, favors and more.

pure luxe bride

5. Work as a team

As exciting as planning your wedding can and will be, it is very easy to get caught up in the craziness of all and forget the real purpose behind it all. Remember that you and your future-hubby are a team and your decisions should be joint. Include him not only in the big decisions such as guest count and catering choices, but also in the smaller details like the color scheme and florals. Chances are, he'll leave these decisions to you but he'll love that you included him and wanted his opinion. Most importantly, make sure to just simply spend some time together, sans wedding details. Have a movie night, take a cooking class, or just sit on the couch and catch up - whatever you do, make time for one another.

Charleston Wedding {Aaron + Caroline} Creek Club at I'On

I get super excited when a killer team of wedding vendors team up to for a big ol' Lowcountry bash.  That's exactly what happened when Ashley Nicole Events joined forces with Richard Bell Photography for Aaron + Caroline's gorgeous Creek Club at I'On wedding this year.  During the wedding planning process, Bride Caroline was studying in Chile (yes, all the way in Chile!), so the mother-of-the-bride stepped up to the plate to design this beautiful Southern affair with the help of Ashley Nicole Events. The talented team of Wildflowers Inc. created  vibrant arrangements in shades of purple, orange and pink to accent the lovely Summer day.

Charleston {Kellie + Andrew} USS Yorktown Wedding

As you drive over the Cooper River Bridge from Downtown Charleston, on your way into Mount Pleasant, you'll see the majestic USS Yorktown docked in the Charleston Harbor.  As eye-catching as it is  from the Bridge, it's nothing compared to the view you'll see once you step foot on the massive ship.  It's ah-mazing.  You get a gorgeous view of the Holy City and as you look to your right, the Cooper is in the background.  It's unreal and makes for the perfect setting for a beautiful Charleston wedding.  Kellie + Andrew recently tied the knot on the flight deck for an unbelievable nautical-themed, military affair.  The couple's red, white and blue bash was planned by the talented crew over at Intrigue Design + Events while Monika Gauthier Photography captured all the details of this charming USS Yorktown wedding! a lowcountry wedding blog featuring charleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddings

Nautical Wedding {Sue + Brian} The Boathouse

It's time to dive in to Southern Wedding Sunday and it's only fair to kick things off with this nautical wedding from our friend and Charleston Wedding Vendor Dana Cubbage!  I'm quite certain it will have you daydreaming about the coast...and Sue's stunning gown!  Thanks to Dana for sharing all the dets...

"Sue + Brian chose beautiful Beaufort, North Carolina for their destination wedding and it was the perfect place for them to celebrate their marriage with family + friends. In town early to get comfortable and relax before the big day, Sue + Brian had plenty of time to spend with everyone who traveled into town to celebrate with them. From sailing trips to beach days to a casual BBQ rehearsal dinner on the water, together with their friends + family, Sue + Brian had a week to remember leading up to their big day.

a lowcountry wedding blog featuring charleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddings a lowcountry wedding blog featuring charleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddings

Rain threatened the area, but Mother Nature was surely looking out for them, as there was not a drop of rain on their wedding day. Everything about their day spoke to their amazing relationships with their family + friends. Sue's sister did everyone's hair + makeup as well as made custom necklaces for all of the bridesmaids. Brian's father acted as Best Man, while both of Sue's sisters served as bridesmaids. The relationship between them all was incredible to watch and so much fun to document

Sue's stunning Pronovias wedding gown stole the show and the bridesmaids looked amazing in their navy Monique Lhuillier dresses. Beautiful yellow + white flowers complimented the day's decor and the venue was simply decorated in navy, yellow + white hues. Their ceremony took place in a beautiful old church in Beaufort, which was filled with such charm. After the ceremony, the family + bridal party rode around town on a trolley for photos. It was a really fun time and everyone was thrilled to celebrate Sue + Brian's marriage!

It was a beautiful day that proved you don't have to spend a million bucks on decor and frills in order to have an amazing wedding. Family, friends, and genuine love reigned supreme for Sue + Brian, and I'm truly honored to have been chosen to document all of that for them!

I was born in Iceland...and still loathe snow nonetheless.

Give us a little background on how your business came to life...

The business definitely wasn't planned. After graduating from College of Charleston in 2007, I had originally planned to go abroad and teach English. But like a lot of things in life, the plan changed. Instead of traveling, I found myself working full time in an accounting office. Though I enjoyed my coworkers and was fortunate to have great bosses, that professional field just wasn't for me. I considered it cubicle servitude and couldn't imagine doing that for forty years. What eventually led me to photography was going back to my media roots. In high school, I had been on the yearbook and newspaper staffs. During college, I contributed a few op-ed pieces to the George Street Observer. So, I wanted to go back that field, but I wanted to give proper attention to the photos as well. Usually the photographs were just afterthoughts or something to go with the words. But I always love a great story, and a visual one can be more captivating than a 10,000 word novel. So, in 2008 I picked up a camera with a new purpose. It wasn't going to be a mere hobby anymore. I started seeing my mentor, Mikayla Mackaness, and photographing every chance I could. In 2010, I found myself moving to Athens, Ohio, to attend a graduate program in visual communication for photojournalism at Ohio University. And then last June, I moved back to Charleston. I honestly don't consider what I do a business. It's a service. It's a privilege. To be chosen to document a moment in someone's life, whether it's a wedding or just daily life, is an honor and a great responsibility that I do not take lightly. The business stuff just comes with making this a career, but the people I meet and telling visual stories is the reason I stay in this business.

What is the one tip you wish you could tell every bride?

I can only tell one?! I'm working on a welcome packet to tell them a lot of tips! I think one of the most important tips is to never forget what your wedding day is about - the love each of you have for one another. Planning a wedding can definitely be overwhelming. And I think in some ways social media has amplified that. Brides are inundated with wedding related information - example: Pinterest. So don't get too wrapped up in the burlap runners and coral stained ribbon. Plan a wedding that reflects your fiance and you and focus on enjoying your special day.

How can a bride come prepared to her first appointment with you?

The first appointment is really where we determine if we're a good fit. Out of all the wedding vendors, brides need to be most comfortable with their photographer. This is because the photographer is with you the majority of the day. If a bride isn't relaxed around the photographer then it will show in the images. So, the first purpose of the initial meeting is to get to know each other a little better. The other reason is to discuss what they're envisioning for wedding photography. I always like to discuss photo ideas for the wedding and I also make sure that the bride understands my style and aesthetic approach. It's up to the couple to decide if my style and personality is a fit for them. As for being prepared, I think the most difficult part for a bride is determining the style of photography she likes and being able to distinguish styles in wedding photographs. Looking at wedding photos and finding images she likes is a step in the right direction. However, often times it takes a consultation with a photographer to help a couple figure out which style best suits them and their wedding.

In three words, sum up your style...

Candid & stylized portraiture

Favorite wedding image you've ever snapped.

There's one per wedding. This would take too long to tell you about all of them. ;)

What blogs provide you daily inspiration to keep your creative juices flowing (non-wedding related)

Since I come from a photojournalism background, I often look at blogs in that field. New York Time's Lens Blog is excellent. Time's Lightbox. I also enjoy the Image Deconstructed which interviews photographers on how they captured a particular photograph. To hear the photographer's voice, which often times never accompanies the picture, offers greater insight in the photography process as well as what photographers internalize from the people they meet and the experiences they have when image making.

  • I' m obsessed with my dogs, Paris and Ginger.
  • I' m high energy all the time, spinning class is my relief at the end of a busy day!
  • I also love going to the beach when I have time.
  • I drink coffee on occasion but I usually steer away from caffeine.
  • I' m a food brat, partly from my upbringing since my Dad was a chef. I enjoy cooking myself, especially Italian.
  • I'm fortunate enough to have become friends with most of my clients.
  • I change my hair like a chameleon! I just went blonde :)
  • I love to travel! Justin and I travel at least once a year to somewhere warm and tropical.
  • I would take a block of cheese any day over desert.
  • Best concert I have ever been to was Journey! However, my pandora is always set to Maroon 5 in my office! It is sacrilegious not to listen to Maroon 5 at least once a day.

I was born and raised in the hospitality industry so it has always been in my blood, although my degree and background is in marketing. I was born and raised in hospitality but never thought I would work in the industry myself. I started the business for fun, and it evolved when I moved to Charleston. What a perfect spot for this industry!

Tell us a little bit about yourself…and by a little, we mean a lot :)

I was born in New York and raised in Maryland, but my heart belongs to South Carolina.  After spending 6+ years in finance, I rediscovered this love for photography and decided to try and fulfill my dream of building my own business + finally doing something I absolutely love for a living.  And wow – 2 years into it, I can finally say I'm living the dream!  I started out specializing in pet photography, which is something I still do + love.  I've always had a special connection with pets, especially dogs, so that was a natural fit for me.  While volunteering at my local animal shelter in Baltimore, I met another photographer who specialized in weddings.  We became good friends through volunteering and so I asked her if I could tag along and help out with some of her weddings.  She said yes and I fell in love with it.  That was in the fall of 2011.  We moved to Charleston in January 2012 and I spent all of 2012 second shooting with some amazing photographers here in Charleston, learning the business + sharpening my technical skills.  After booking pretty much every weekend, I thought to myself "maybe I could do this full-time and quit my day job" (which I hated).  So I gave myself a deadline – by August 1, I would have a website up and I'd start marketing myself.  Well, as luck would have it, I was laid off from my full-time job on July 31 and so I was pushed into life as a full-time photographer.  But it was the best thing that ever happened to me.  Since then, I've been working hard to build my wedding photography business and it's been amazing.  I think back to my life a year ago and still can't believe how much has happened and how incredibly lucky I am to finally be doing something I absolutely love for a living.

I'm married to my best friend, Brian, and we have 3 dogs – two Golden Retrievers named Camden + Brady, and a small lab-pit bull mix named Beckham.  I love to read, travel + eat… but not necessarily in that order.  I love reality TV, Starbucks, and anything that sparkles.

One crazy fun fact we wouldn't know about you...

I have been involved with animal rescue for years and I've fostered several Golden Retrievers and 3 pit bulls for local rescues + shelters. Someday, I hope to start a pit bull rescue here in the Charleston area.

Give us a little background on how your business came to life...

I've always loved photography.  I can remember using my parent's film Minolta when I was young and I just LOVED taking photos of anything… but especially of my pets.  When my parents got me my own camera one year for my birthday, I was in love.  I took a camera with me everywhere and I still have boxes of prints + albums from my childhood.  I just can't bear to get rid of them!  When I bought my first DSLR camera in 2010, something clicked.  I had always loved photography – capturing moments – but the DSLR allowed me to create art.  I loved that!!  So I dove into it, learning how to shoot manually and taking in as much information as possible.  I started my pet photography business in early 2011 and my wedding photography business in August 2012.  It's been an amazing couple of years!

What is the one tip you wish you could tell every bride?

When you're looking for a wedding photographer, make sure whoever you book makes you feel confident and comfortable.  Feeling at ease with your photographer will only enhance your images in the end.

How can a bride come prepared to her first appointment with you?

I love when my brides come to me with ideas.  Although I rely on my own creativity, it's always great when brides are vocal about what inspires them and what exactly they love about my work, so that I can focus on providing them with great images that they will be over-the-moon excited about.  I guess I really like brides who aren't afraid to speak up and let me know what they are really looking for when they hire me.  It helps ensure that we're both on the same page and that we are the right fit for each other.

Favorite wedding image you've ever snapped.

There are so many wonderful images, it's hard to choose just one!  Right now, it's a tie between Becca + Jay's portrait on the beach (below) and Stephanie + Jason's portrait on the beach (first image).  I just love the light in the first one and the cool tree in the second one :)  Both of them are on the homepage of my website.  That's where most of my recent favorites live!

It’s Friday and you just cashed your paycheck….what’s your first splurge?

I'm pretty good at saving money and sticking to my budget, but every once in a while, I have to hit up the J Crew outlet for some new clothes :)

What blogs provide you daily inspiration to keep your creative juices flowing (non-wedding related) ?

I follow a lot of designers on Facebook that keep me inspired – Promise Tangeman, Ravyn Stadick, Jennifer Olmstead.  Most of the blogs I read are wedding related or pet photography related.  I gain my inspiration from real life and things around me.  When I'm out and about, I'm constantly inspired by light, architecture, textures, colors + unique locations.  I am always on the look out and thinking of new things I could bring to my work.

What the most rewarding thing about your line of work?

Being a part of my clients' wedding day is so rewarding.  Becoming friends with them throughout the process is amazing and something I cherish.  Sharing + capturing their joy and their love is indescribable.  I'm so blessed.
