Melissa & Kevin began dating their junior year at Colgate University and after graduation their love continued to grow as they moved to New York City. But when Kevin began planning his proposal, he decided it was only fitting to pop the question in Melissa's home state of South Carolina. In 2013, just days before Christmas, Kevin surprised Melissa with an engagement ring at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, to which she excitedly accepted. After spending the holidays celebrating with family and friends, the couple began planning their unforgettable Charleston wedding with the help of the team at Engaging Events. The end result was an elegant Lowcountry reception in soft shades of grey and peach with natural elements fitting of the scenic backdrop. Find all details captured by Richard Ellis below along decor inspiration and tips from the bride herself.
From Melissa: "I was incredibly overwhelmed with how every last detail came together so harmoniously on our special day. Though I'd been involved in most of the details, it still was a beautiful surprise to see how everything we had planned and decided on over the months came together so beautifully that day: the flowers, the personal handmade touches, the mixed variety centerpieces, and mostly that flawless room at the River Course finally filled with all of our family and loved ones."
Favorite details: "Hand made his/hers chair hangers my mom made as a surprise for our big day. Framed family photos of our parents/grandparents through the generations on their wedding day. The hand painted tree "guestbook" that our mutual friend (husband of a bridesmaid, my close friend) made for us - that matched the oak tree emblem that was a consistent design element throughout the details of our day."
The Vision: "I wanted to be true to the natural beauty of the river course inside and out. The views, the natural elements - all so stunning on their own. We added only small details to enhance the natural elements of our setting."
"Additionally, because my gown was unique (blush) we wanted to ensure all elements went along with the very soft features of the dress, as well as the soft natural features of the outdoor elements at the River Course. We carefully chose flowers, invitation design, fonts, and day-of-design accents, to help create a very soft and natural overall look and feel."
Advice: "Go with your gut! I flip flopped about a lot of decisions and usually came out deciding on my original choice, and once I made it - I didn't look back. I promise you'll enjoy your day so much, you won't be thinking twice about a napkin color or the placecards you chose. If you are even considering a first look: DO IT. And do one with your dad, too, if you can. Best parts of the day were those two moments, hands down."
